A very capable Russian Slava-class cruiser ‘apparently’ suffered crippling damage from at least one subsonic, Neptune Surface to Surface Anti Ship missile. How did Russia’s most capable large surface combatant fail to defend itself against a missile loosely based on Harpoon technology?

Come on it was aided by the P8 Poseidon and ea18 GROWLERS that are in Europe. First the P8 track the Mosvka the Growlers blinded the Mosvka defeane radars then a unknown missiles struck the warship. or a stealth missiles hit the warship… come on the Mosvka has a sophisticated defense, so how come did not detected the missiles??? simply because it was blinded and stealth missiles are the hit. US and Russia know it. News even said that the P8 is in Romania that time monitoring the warship.. you said Russia has lied eversince, so as USA. it's called lie and deception and US is master of it. SOME EVEN SAY THAT STEALTH AIRCRAFT ARE NOW CAPABLE OF EW PLATFORMS. SO
Aaron, not too long ago you did a video about whether or not the US would defend taiwan. You looked on the state department website for the official policy which indicated the United States would not defend taiwan. However, I just learned about the Taiwan relations act of 1979. In part it says the following…
"to provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character; and
to maintain the capacity of the United States to resist any resort to force or other forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security, or the social or economic system, of the people on Taiwan"
What part of "sea skimming missile" is not clear?
Thanks for the interesting information.
Under water being used as a sub.
You didn't talk about the cabin cruiser! In the photo it looks like a fairly large boat.
I'd appreciate if you would refer to this ship in the past tense 🙂
The Ghost of Kiev and the heroes of Snake Island joined forces. Honest!
Update: Ukraine has classified the sunken wreckage as a Heritage site. Trolling the Russians again.
The shortest analysis can be done by anyone who ever worked in the russkies' military industry. Their weapons are useless.
At this point I am thinking Ukraine would be an excellent member of NATO. They seem to have proven an expertise in defeating Russian arms with a high eficiancy. They can give us "real world" information.
Excellent analysis, absolutely excellent.
you can almost certainly add the good old Russian corruption factor into the equation, the systems were probably poorly maintained to fund the Captain's holiday villa and the officer's mistresses
Yes, the Moskva should have easily defeated a subsonic anti-ship missile. Guess what, it most likely did. The problem is that the Ukrainians will have a whole bunch of them against this ship. The second problem is that modern anti-ship missiles aren't intentionally designed to be easily defeated either.
But let's talk about the Moskva first. The long-range and short-range surface-to-air missiles the Moskva carried were simply not effective against very low altitude targets. The Neptune missiles simply flew too low for these SAM's to be able to effectively intercept them. Look up the data on the missile systems and you will find these systems are not capable of intercepting sea-skimming missiles flying as low as just 9 feet above the water.
This left the Moskva only with its six AK-630 guns as effective defense measure against incoming Neptune missiles. These guns have a maximum firing range of up to 5000m, they fire 5000 shots per minute and have 2000, possibly 3000 rounds of ammo available stored with the gun. Two of these guns are mounted on the starboard side, two on the port side and two center-line. This means not all 6 but merely 4 guns were able to fire at an incoming missile barrage approaching on the port side.
Let's also keep in mind that the Russians had no airborne radars in operation, so the Moskva had to fully rely on its own on-board radar systems to detect the incoming missiles. And these on-board radars were not able to detect the extremely low flying internally guided missiles beyond the horizon.
With Neptune missiles approaching at 900km/h (560 mph) a firing range of 5000meters each missile will take less than 20 seconds to pass through the effective firing range of the guns before they hit the ship. According to the manufacturers information, the Neptune Missile system is designed to pair 4 launch vehicles carrying 4 missiles each with one command unit.
There are options to add more launchers, but the system is brand new and was only put into service several weeks ago during the conflict. Therefore, I will simply assume the Ukrainians were capable of launching a barrage of up to 16 missiles. Considering the flag-ship Moskva was an extremely high value target (for strategic and military reasons, but also for propaganda reasons) it would be silly to assume the Ukrainians only launched just two Neptune missiles. I suppose it makes far more sense to assume the Ukrainians fired so to say 'everything they had' at the Moskva.
The rest of the story is very simple: 4 guns and 8000 (at best 12000 rounds of ammo) versus 16 incoming missiles. Even if the Ukrainians launched fewer than 16 missiles, say 8 or 12, then such a barrage of incoming missiles would most certainly overwhelm these 4 guns.
The Moskva could not see the missiles coming until they were already fairly close. The long-range and the short-range SAMs were not suitable to intercept the incoming threat. And the last line of defense consisting of just 4 rapid firing guns was simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of incoming missiles in the short time and with the limited ammunition at the guns to shoot them all down.
However many missiles the Ukrainians may have launched all together, it only took two of them to make it past the guns, hitting and sinking the ship.
Any ship can be a Submarine at least once with the right attitude.
I think the Russian Warship that was sunk was fake! The real Moskva was probably sold to China so Putin could buy his super billion dollar yacht. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was a plastic or inflatable toy boat!
I also remember back in the 90th on our DDG it took a while to get guns and Sea Sparrows ready to shoot at incomming targets. We also could not proof our capabillities ones, because we never have been in a war situation. Another thing I remember that even the Britisch Navy was hit by friendly fire in the golf war. They also couldnt shoot down the missle. Everything flying at sea level cant be trackt efficiently.
Fake news
This ship with all of its weapons and tons of ammunitions, explosives I can confirm it is a beautiful target. Just one anti ship missile needs to go trough the defense and hit at the right place. Then nobody can stop the chain reaction of the explosions and fire. Thats for sure. If the story is correct and real and they really hit this ship with missile or missiles, then nice job Ukraine. Nice one!
Russian ships are not trained like their pilots and soldiers.
In regard of other countries taking inspiration in designing defense development, look no further than the US.
