Hair Braiders In New Jersey Are At Constant Risk Of Losing Their Jobs

Hair braiders in many states across the country are at constant risk of massive fines and losing their jobs. The primary reason: state cosmetology boards. Over the past several decades, these boards have lobbied to require licensing for braiding services, despite offering little training in the discipline or justifying why a non-invasive, non-chemical method needs to be so heavily regulated. Now hair braiders and politicians are fighting back against policies they claim disproportionately affect immigrant women of color. VNT goes to one of the states at the center of the debate: New Jersey.

  1. They want to tax that money. They want to make it harder for them to operate and make a decent salary. Like the sister said, there are no chemicals used in hair braiding. Just about all black women and even their daughters had their hair braided at some time. I have never once heard a complaint or a negative side effect from braids, had mine braided for years, no problems by different people. You all fight that to the end. I braided my daughters hair for years. Let them try to find people who has suffered problems with their hair because of braids. If white people had Braid shops they would not be pressed to get a license. This is just another way this government works so hard to keep black people down. It probably really got stirred up when that kkk trump was president. That old man been standing there just cutting hair probably over 50 years. He needs to learn how to do braids or weaves or something, looks like he should have been retired.

  2. I’m from Jersey & I would NEVER go back Bc everything in that state is about fucking over their citizens. Plain & simple. It’s ridiculous to think braiders need a “license” just like it’s ridiculous that anyone needs a “license” to get married either. ?

  3. News flash VICE, cosmo school and barber school don’t teach you sh*t it’s just a formality you have to go through to be able to test for the license. She makes allot of money braiding hair and she should go through what everyone else had to. You can make this same silly argument for virtually any type of license be it real estate, contractor, hygienist ect…

  4. I would like to see some training in the industry to help save people's edges. Its getting ridiculous. (For braiders, wig and weave installers, youtubers, etc.)

  5. Is it fair to make them go thru the whole program? Not really but they should have to trained in sanitation and safety and be licensed and insured. I do NOT think it's fair to put a racial spin on it (which i feel they did). This was and is still a problem in my hometown black women running unlicensed shops out of their homes. I think for alot of black hairdressers it's more a lack of wanting it get fully licensed because many places will help you get trained and licensed.

  6. If they can take classes for a low price on basics of hygiene and sanitation, then license them that way. Why should they need to learn to cut or colour hair if they aren't performing that service?

  7. ANY OL BODY CAN GET A FOOD HANDLERS LICENSE..WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR YOU BRAIDERS…DURING THE LOCKDOWN YOU WERE..ARE ..WILL BE ESSENTIAL FOR PEOPLES SANITY BECAUSE WHO DOESNT WANT GREAT LOOKING HAIR..EVEN IF ONLY YOU SEE IT..THANKS..

  8. Another bs propaganda video by vice. First the 1/8 black girl correcting the full black lady with the African accent how to pronounce Ghana. Enough of the racial virtue sinaling. I just want to remove tattoos so why go through a dermatologist school?

  9. Yes the braiding industry should be licenced, at least at a modified beauty licence. How do I know if I get fake hair put in, I am not going to get an infection. If I do I need to know what you are going to do about it.

  10. The law is stupid. These woman are clearly experts in their field! They need to be able to practice there craft and earn a good living like all Americans are supposed to be able to do.

  11. As long as they do not use a chemical on the customer it should be fine to operate without schooling.
Maybe just let them test out of the safety and health section, for board certification. The only things they need to know is how to clean the supplies, building, and themselves so as not to spread bacteria, viruses, fungal infections, and parasites. The rest of the information schools teach, is useless if the artist does not use chemicals on the customers.

  12. The USA is the only country asking for that. You don’t need that on the UK, Europe etc…
    It’s a racist country, and that’s all I’m saying….

  13. I got my California Cosmetology in 1965 it cost me 360 dllrs. And I did 1600. hrs. Before going to go to the State Board and it took 2 days to complete. For me it was worth it because in Tijuana I was making 15 a week working 6 days a week.barely for my lunch a few spending.

  14. Wow…so frustrating/depressing to see systemic racism in every little area of Black peoples' lives. Those in power find a way to run down anyone they can in any way they can…fk…
