The Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916 were a series of shark attacks along the coast of New Jersey, in the United States, between July 1 and 12, 1916, in which four people were killed and one injured. This is the Matawan Creek location from those attacks. The book / movie JAWS was based on these infamous shark attacks.

Let me clarify that it is 1 mile to the Raritan Bay which then goes into the Atlantic Ocean. I hoped the map provided in the video would have made it obvious that I misspoke.
Just some bacteria killing marine life along the Atlantic coast! O M G that's a really big deal!
I grew up on the Jersey shore and there were a lot of Fishers, Stillwells in the area.
The bakery that used to be in the building in Lakewood where I was a picture Framer
used to be Stillwells Bakery.
The old stone Oven were still in the basement area where I worked.
I knew about the Bull Shark theory but not about the White Shark.
I been to that attack area many times in the past.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
8-9 ft and a mile and a half from the ocean sounds like typical bull shark behavior.
Wasn't 1916 a hot year making the water warmer than usual? It was alot more cleaner and natural looking in those days too!
What's with all the dead fish
anyone notice all the dead fish flouting everywhere?
How safe do you think he and the person with him are in kayaks if indeed another Bull Shark was in those waters. Especially, considering they are so aggressive.
The gravesites are heartbreaking. Stanley Fisher is a hero and I think his grave should be just as adorned. Thank you for this video, I had no idea.
Thera are dead fish floating in the creek. Not a good sign.
The "creek" is a much larger than I thought. It is more like a river or lake really
1:17 Why is there a fish stuck in the roof of the tunnel??
Thank you for taking me to the actual place this happened. I have been obsessed with this story since I was a young child. You’ve let me see, hear, and imagine what it was like for these kids and adults. Thank you so much!
Not surprised, we occasionally get bull sharks in St. Louis during the summer.
I was very familiar with the story but really enjoyed your video. I live in, Toms River, and was going to paddle, Matawan, creek last year. Didn't get a chance to but will definitely do it this year. Any info on how the fishing is? Not for sharks!
15:50 did anyone els see something move in the tunnel on the left
sad story?
enjoyed this , thank you for your UL
Thanks for clearing that up about the dead ? everywhere. We were wondering. Rip to those poor people.
I wonder if a dead animal was in the creek spreading the smell of death downstream
That creek is definitely good fishing (except for when there is a disease killing the fish) as evidenced by 15:20 .. And also by the fact that there are dead fish all over so it must ve packed full of fish when the water/fish are healthy
Good work!
Of course,the fear started in NJ….where else?…..I love NJ.✌️
"sun bathing was down 75%".
Who's keeping count of this?
There was a movie on it 12 days of terror. Pretty good
No, it was not the first documented shark attacks. Shark attacks have been documented since the mid 1400’s, well over 500 years.
Real life jaws was a WW2 mission that went side ways leaving tons of soldiers floating in the sea watching sharks eat everyone around them wonder who will be next
Right hand side of screen at 52 seconds what the hell is that?
Amazing video
Want to really blow your mind? Bull sharks have been spotted as far inland as St. Louis Missouri. Google ‘St Louis map’ to blow your mind.
why is a fish stuck in the ceiling?
I wonder what attracted the sharks ? that far in? Maybe back then a lot of waste and what not was thrown in the water? That is just crazy! But it does happen when they get off track for some reason! Poor guys!
I keep seeing reports of mass fish kills across the world. Something is unfolding.
15:18 A killer shark is still chasing bait in the creek…
RIP Stucky the fish.
I have never seen that many dead fish floating around. Is that all natural in there? Greetings from Finland, nice video.
At the [ 00:15:20 ] mark, did you notice the fish jump near your shoulder / hand while you were talking about the shark? ……. or was it a SHARK fin that popped up??? [Help me out here! I'm going for hysteria.]
Buncha dead fish in your water.
We’re due for another.
What’s with the floating fish? That’s dangerous for fish.
Something about swimming under a bridge in that green water which is supposedly a “creek” (I imagine like 2-10 feet deep) and being eaten by a shark or jus having a fish bump you is… well… absolutely horrid
It's so polluted now ain't no sharks up that creek now.
What is up with all the dead fish?
