Vuelta a España 2004 Del 4 al 26 de septiembre de 2004 se celebró la 59ª Vuelta a España, una carrera ciclista de fondo por etapas y una de las tres grandes vueltas, que constó de 21 etapas con un total de 2.925 km (1.818 mi), y lo ganó Roberto Heras del equipo ciclista Liberty Seguros. A mitad de la Vuelta 2004 parecía que iba a ser un triunfo fácil para Heras, pero en la última semana su compatriota Santiago Pérez ganó dos duras etapas de montaña, convirtiéndose así en un rival importante. Finalmente, Heras ganó con solo 30 segundos de ventaja sobre Pérez. Pérez y su compañero de equipo de sistemas auditivos de Phonak, Tyler Hamilton, más tarde darían positivo por dopaje en sangre a partir de muestras de sangre tomadas durante la carrera.[1] Francisco Mancebo, también de España, quedó tercero. El primer no español fue Stefano Garzelli de Italia en 11°. El maillot de puntos lo ganó Erik Zabel de Alemania, el maillot de montaña lo ganó Félix Cárdenas de Colombia y el maillot combinado Roberto Heras. Kelme fue el ganador de la clasificación por equipos. Alessandro Petacchi, un velocista italiano ganó cuatro etapas, pero no terminó la Vuelta. The 59th Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain), a long-distance bicycle stage race and one of the three grand tours, was held from 4 September to 26 September 2004. It consisted of 21 stages covering a total of 2,925 km (1,818 mi), and was won by Roberto Heras of the Liberty Seguros cycling team.

Halfway through the 2004 Vuelta, it appeared it would become an easy win for Heras, but in the last week his fellow countryman Santiago Pérez won two heavy mountain stages, thus becoming an important rival. Eventually Heras won with only 30 seconds advantage on Pérez. Pérez and Phonak hearing systems teammate Tyler Hamilton would later test positive for blood doping from blood samples taken during the race.[1] Francisco Mancebo, also from Spain took third. The first non-Spaniard was Stefano Garzelli from Italy in 11th. The points jersey was won by Erik Zabel from Germany, the mountain jersey was won by Félix Cárdenas from Colombia and the combination jersey was won by Roberto Heras. Kelme was the winner of the team ranking. Alessandro Petacchi, an Italian sprinter won four stages, but he didn’t finish the Vuelta.
