Vuelta a España 2004 Del 4 al 26 de septiembre de 2004 se celebró la 59ª Vuelta a España, una carrera ciclista de fondo por etapas y una de las tres grandes vueltas, que constó de 21 etapas con un total de 2.925 km (1.818 mi), y lo ganó Roberto Heras del equipo ciclista Liberty Seguros. A mitad de la Vuelta 2004 parecía que iba a ser un triunfo fácil para Heras, pero en la última semana su compatriota Santiago Pérez ganó dos duras etapas de montaña, convirtiéndose así en un rival importante. Finalmente, Heras ganó con solo 30 segundos de ventaja sobre Pérez. Pérez y su compañero de equipo de sistemas auditivos de Phonak, Tyler Hamilton, más tarde darían positivo por dopaje en sangre a partir de muestras de sangre tomadas durante la carrera. Francisco Mancebo, también de España, quedó tercero. El primer no español fue Stefano Garzelli de Italia en 11°. El maillot de puntos lo ganó Erik Zabel de Alemania, el maillot de montaña lo ganó Félix Cárdenas de Colombia y el maillot combinado Roberto Heras. Vuelta a España 2002 Del 7 al 29 de septiembre de 2002 se disputó la 57ª Vuelta a España, carrera ciclista de fondo por etapas y una de las tres grandes vueltas, que constó de 21 etapas con un total de 2.957 km (1.837 mi), y lo ganó Aitor González del equipo ciclista Kelme-Costa Blanca. Joseba Beloki, segundo clasificado del Tour de Francia 2002, formó parte del equipo ganador ONCE-Eroski que ganó la contrarreloj por equipos inaugural de la carrera. Beloki mantuvo el liderato hasta la quinta etapa cuando lo perdió ante un compañero pero en la sexta etapa la ganó Roberto Heras. Beloki perdió un tiempo considerable frente a otros aspirantes a la clasificación general Óscar Sevilla, Aitor González y Heras. El Sevilla se hizo con el maillot de líder que había lucido durante gran parte de la anterior edición de la Vuelta. Tras la primera contrarreloj individual, su compañero Aitor González se ha quedado a un segundo del maillot. En la etapa 15, González aumentó el ritmo del grupo y puso en aprietos al Sevilla. Heras se benefició de esto y atacó para ganar la etapa y tomar la delantera. Heras mantuvo el liderato hasta el último día cuando hubo una contrarreloj individual. Heras comenzaba el día con una ventaja de un minuto y ocho segundos sobre González pero la perdía en los primeros 25 km de la contrarreloj. González tomó la delantera y ganó la Vuelta, Heras quedó segundo y Beloki se recuperó para finalmente terminar tercero en la general. La Vuelta también estuvo marcada por tres victorias de etapa del velocista italiano Mario Cipollini, quien se retiró de la carrera después de su tercera victoria de etapa para prepararse para el Campeonato Mundial. Durante la etapa 15 los ciclistas subieron el Alto de l’Angliru bajo la lluvia. Los autos del equipo se estancaron en la parte más empinada, algunos no pudieron volver a arrancar porque sus llantas resbalaron en los mensajes pintados por los fanáticos. Los pasajeros quedaron atrapados detrás de ellos y otros tuvieron que viajar con llantas pinchadas porque los mecánicos no podían alcanzarlos. David Millar tuvo tres caídas y protestó entregando su dorsal a un metro de la línea de meta. Los jueces dictaminaron que no había terminado la etapa y abandonó la carrera. The 58th Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain), a long-distance bicycle stage race and one of the three grand tours, was held from 6 September to 28 September 2003. It consisted of 21 stages covering a total of 2,957 km (1,837 mi), and was won by Roberto Heras of the US Postal cycling team.

Isidro Nozal lead the general classification for much of the race until succumbing to the pressure posed by Roberto Heras who closed the gap to Nozal over the final days and took the jersey in the final time trial.
