How Are Premier League TV Rights Assigned?

With Setanta Sports seemingly fighting a losing battle against the economic downturn, what does it all mean for the distribution of the Premier League’s live UK television rights in the coming seasons?

At present, live Barclays Premier League TV rights are split into six packages, each consisting of 23 live matches. Therefore a total of 138 games from the league will be screened live on UK TV every season.

For the forthcoming 2009-10 season, BSkyB owns the rights for four of the six packages available, meaning that the British broadcaster will show 92 live matches next season.

The distribution of Live Premier League TV Rights:

2009-10 season

– BSkyB will show 92 live EPL matches

– New ESPN channel will show 46 live games

From 2010-11 season until 2013

– BSkyB will show 115 live EPL matches

– New ESPN channel will show the remaining 23 live games

The remaining two packages of 46 games, that Setanta was forced to surrender after failing to come up with the cash, were snapped up this week by Disney-owned American broadcaster, ESPN.

ESPN, who currently broadcast two channels on UK satellite television, are expected to announce the launch of a new channel to screen the newly-acquired live matches, that consumers will be able to purchase on top of their current Sky TV subscription.

The American media company is also expected to look to broadcast their new channel on other TV platforms such as Virgin Media.

But after the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, Sky will tighten its grip on the live games after it emerged that the company has already won an auction for another 23 match package, bringing the total number of live games on Sky to a hefty 115. Meanwhile, ESPN will show the remaining 23 games on its newly branded channel from 2010-11.

Finally, whilst one might assume that Setanta’s demise is in Sky’s favour, it could in fact be bad news for Rupert Murdoch’s company. Industry regulators demand that there must be a direct competitor to Sky as no single broadcaster are able to own all six packages.

This deal was agreed in 2005 with the European Commission, when it was ruled that Premier League television rights must be split between more than one broadcaster.

Beating the Bookies With Football Predictions

Even though bookies have more access to improve their methods in football predictions, they are still humans and vulnerable to commit errors. As a bettor, you can spot holes to their game forecasts but it would take trained eyes. There are two methods to spot errors on predictions not just by bookies but anyone else.

The first method is to take a closer look on the information provided and to spot infinite match data. The second method entails improvement on predicting game stats used to carry out the prediction.

The first method would require analysis of provided information such as pair type or priority that is not used in stat forms. Among the most common consideration that could influence the result of soccer game is the game type. A game could be on the world cup, national league or just an exhibition game. The most lucrative type of game is the cup finals, where there are millions of bettors placing their best bets for their preferred team. So the better you are guided using a prediction, the more chances that you could gain profit from your bets.

Every team must have a definite concern for upcoming events, since team resources could be limited. Good examples of this are the national cups in Europe ranging from the top tier to poor tiers. You must also take note of the game time since football predictions are normally not accurate on the start and at the season finale.

It is also helpful to take note of the player’s injuries, health conditions and changes inside the team since these are also included in writing the predictions. Other considerations include the condition of the pitch, the dynamism of team managers, the attendance during the previous games, weather forecast during the actual day of the game and don’t forget luck.

Furthermore, there are football leagues that are foreseeable and unforeseeable. Soccer leagues in Italy, Norway, French and Spain are considered as foreseeable. On the other hand, soccer leagues in England and Germany are unforeseeable particularly at the start and end of the season.

To evaluate all these data for each match would be a bit complicated and rigorous process. However, you can use highly developed statistical forecast techniques that will be similar to prediction forms offered by bookies.

Soccer predictions from bookies can always be improved. First, in studying the predictions carefully, it is quite easy to detect that the models are based on average game stats. Lower odds normally match up with higher positions in the actual game. It is quite clear that the correctness of their forms could change when the preferred team implements a major transformation. So, in providing importance to the team dynamics, you can boost your odds of winnings by taking a chance to place your bets on the underdogs.

Aside from this, the model of football predictions offered by bookies does not provide a fine line between the attacks and defense mode of the teams and the strategy of the team when they are playing at home or away.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Some child prodigies never live up to the expectations they excite. Cristiano Ronaldo has. Best known as one of soccer’s brightest, best and most outspoken wingers, Ronaldo started his career at only seventeen years of age. He started out in youth leagues and then moved to Sporting Lisbon in 2002. In just one year with the team, he’d caught the eye and opened the pocketbook of one of England’s Premier League Teams, Manchester United. It cost Manchester approximately 12 million pounds to their roster, but the young player went on to prove he was worth it.

In the next six seasons, Ronaldo played in 292 games with the Manchester club. In those games he managed to score one hundred and eighteen goals. Of course, his natural flamboyance earned him such endearing accolades as «monstrous ego» and «petulant». Ronaldo shrugged of any implied criticism. After all, whatever he was doing, it was working and working well. So well in fact that, in 2008, he scored 42 goals for Manchester United and earned the title of the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Cristiano played for Team Portugal in the 2004 and 2008 EURO and in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The fame he garnered at Manchester and his success on the National Team were probably catalysts that set into motion the record-breaking offer by Real Madrid that enabled them to acquire Cristiano Ronaldo in June of 2009. The Spanish club reportedly paid a fee of €94-million (around $132 US) to acquire Ronaldo from Manchester.

Since joining Real Madrid to the thundering applause of the fans, Ronaldo has been slow to add to his team achievements. Between injuries and then time commitments with the National Team, he missed out on both of Madrid’s Champions League group stage matches. Then, in December he was sent off for the very first time in his career with Madrid. In the same match, he also missed a penalty and then was later carded for removing his shirt in a celebration and then for kicking an opponent. Still, it seems that the management are just waiting for his star to rise again, and for it to shine on Real Madrid this time around.

UEFA Champions League Draw – Arsenal vs AS Roma

So, the Champions League draw have been made, and I have to admit one of the most anticipated matches is Inter vs Man Utd. Italian champions vs English champions. I’m an Arsenal fan, so I’m rather happy about it. Man Utd think they are the best, well eat this! Let’s see how you get past Inter.

But there is another fixture I’m very much looking forward to. Roma vs Arsenal. Why? Both are my favourite teams, and they are 2 very similar clubs. Mirror image in other words.

Firstly, both clubs are having some financial problem. Which is the reason why both clubs doesn’t spend big. Look at the players Arsenal and Roma have signed in the past few seasons: While big stars like Cristian Chivu left, instead of getting a big money replacement Luciano Spalleti got Juan for a mere 6.3 million euros. When the legend of Arsenal, Thierry Henry left, many people was thinking whether his replacement could lived up to expectations. Arsene Wenger chose to fork out only 8 million to sign Eduardo Da Silva, and although he’s injured at the moment, his future looks bright.

Secondly, both clubs have been praised for their brilliant attacking football. Arsenal was believed to have played the best football ever seen in England during their Invincibles’ season (2003/04), and up till today they do just that. Roma have been praised by pundits for playing exciting, attacking football since Luciano Spalleti took over and deployed the 4-5-1 formation. Normally in football it’s the beauty vs the beast, but I believe in this match, both clubs will be known as the beauties and will be fighting their asses off.

Lastly, both clubs have their own star talisman of the team. Francesco Totti have always been associated with AS Roma, and up till today the fans still worship him. Francesc Fabregas, although only 21 years of age, has been one of the most popular players in Arsenal at the moment, and seeing how similar both players’ style of play are, it’s certainly a battle of the golden boys. However years ago this could be even more intense, when Thierry Henry was still at Arsenal. I’m sure about 4 years ago everybody wanted to see the 2 best strikers at their peak facing each other on the football field. What a match it would be.
