The Merseyside giants have submitted an improved offer of €40m plus a footballer in order to sign midfielder Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid. Spain international has been a permanent fixture in Los Colchoneros lineup for a good part of the past seven years.
However, Niguez saw his importance within the team reduce during the last campaign even as Los Rojiblancos went on to lift the La Liga title. With Rodrigo De Paul arriving to strengthen the midfield unit further, Saul is now ready for an exit from Atletico Madrid this summer.
The 26-year-old midfielder’s situation has led to serious interest from a host of clubs, including Liverpool, Man United and Barcelona. The Blaugrana had been touted to be involved in a swap deal with Atletico Madrid that would have seen Antoine Griezmann move the other way with the Spanish midfielder arriving at Barcelona.
However, negotiations over such an arrangement have hit a brick wall, alerting the PL bigwigs. Liverpool’s need for a new midfielder emanates from the departure of former mainstay Georginio Wijnaldum.
