The Arizona Cardinals will play their 89th season for the NFL this year, along with their 21st season in the state of Arizona. The Cardinals ended their 2007 season with a score of 8-8; far from transcendent but actually a notable improvement from 2006 where they finished last place in the NFC West with a 5-11 record. This year will be the second for head coach Ken Whisenhunt who started coaching in 2007. Though last year wasn’t exactly a winning season, management was probably impressed at how quickly Whisenhunt improved the team. Whisenhunt is known for his brilliant offensive plays as well as his success in Pittsburgh serving as that team’s offensive coordinator.

The team’s draft picks would be an important part to predicting the season. Early on, the team was looking to fill a few key positions, including an offensive tackle, because of unimpressive results from Oliver Ross and with the loss of Leonard Davis. The linebacker was another important position, as most team members playing thus far haven’t warmed up to the role. Cornerback was another position that the team had to consider going into the 2008 draft. In addition to these needs, the team felt the pressure of history, as their last four drafts have been rated as excellent and let to many quality starters and backups.

The team’s draft started with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, a cornerback from Tennessee State University. He was followed by defensive end Calais Campbell of the University of Miami, wide receiver Early Doucet from Louisiana State University and Kenny Iwebema, a defensive end from the University of Iowa. Round out the list were running back Tim Hightower from the University of Richmond, defensive end Chris Harrington from Texas A&M University and offensive tackle Brandon Keith from the University of Northern Iowa.

What was the media’s reaction to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie? Uncertain, though he was declared first-round stock potential because of his performance at the Senior Bowl. Of course, some argue that most of the receivers at the Senior Bowl we’re lacking. Experts agree that if Rodgers-Cromartie is to help the team, he really needs to be developed at a fast pace. At least Rodgers-Cromartie was a popular choice-Campbell was less well received, as he doesn’t seem to fit in well with Whisenhunt’s defensive strategies thus far. The bottom line is that many of the team’s draft choices have to be introduced quickly and developed quickly if they hope to make a difference in Arizona.

The biggest problem is that among these draft choices there are no sure-thing playmakers and that may be a risk the team cannot afford to make. Plus, they have some heavy competition this season against the St. Louis Rams and the Seattle Seahawks. It should be noted though that under the management of Ken Whisenhunt, the Cardinals have already improved their score; 8-8 may not be major league yet, but it is the team’s best record since 1998. Whisenhunt obviously has a strategy in 2008 and the resurrection of the Cardinals may be starting slowly but surely.

I had done something and now, almost by accident, I was in the middle of a whirlwind. The dream-like funnel dropped me in the corner office at One NFL Way, Mt. Laurel, New Jersey – it was NFL Films.

«Is this real? Why am I here?»

«Is that who I think it is?»

«Is that, what I think it is?»

Surely I would wake up from this dream. I had to! This couldn’t really be happening.

The corner office was Steve Sabol’s, the NFL legend. And no, it wasn’t a dream. We were arm and arm, as his staff took the celebratory picture.

Years before, many decades actually, I had been a football loving kid in British Columbia, Canada. I loved playing football and watching the NFL on TV, especially the highlight films. That’s where I first heard the voice and the felt presence of Steve Sabol. His films stirred my imagination. I loved the poetic slow motion images, thundering music and captivating story lines. As a fan, everything about NFL Films was bigger than life.

Being a fan of something is one thing, but how on earth did I get here in this office, with this man? Luck perhaps, heaven sent for certain, but it sure as hell wasn’t by accident!

During a moment of unplanned frustration I wrote a letter on a whim, then thought about it for a day and didn’t send it. In my life I have rarely vacillated on anything, but I sat on my letter for a week as I debated the pros and cons of sending it. Then one day I read a familiar statement again: «When you have a good idea – do it immediately!» I went to the post office and promptly mailed my letter.

A few weeks later a return post card showed up with a Bruno Nagurski stamp on it from NFL Films. The plain white, card stock paper had the NFL Films logo and a hand-written note:

Bohemian FC is the oldest football team in Ireland. It was started in September 1890 and was one of the instigators of what is now known as the Eircomloi League of Ireland.

It has the unique attribute of being the only team never to drop out of the League’s first division. Only one other team, Shelbourne, has been in the League since its inception.

Throughout its history the club has experience both good times and bad. Perhaps its lowest ebb was a 34 season run that saw no silverware in the trophy cabinet.

Many fans point to the club’s prolonged amateur status as the explanation for these dark times. During this period Bohemian FC successfully brought many new players into the game, but as the opportunity for a professional carer beckoned, many of these aspiring footballers left to follow a more lucrative professional career with Bohemian FC’s competitors.

1969 finally saw an end to this drain of talent as the club turned professional and signed its first pro player – a landmark moment in the club’s history.

The following decade would signal a change in Bohemian’s fortunes as they went on to secure both league and cup titles and establish themselves as a major force in the Irish game.

To date, the Bohemians, as they are affectionately known, have recorded 10 League of Ireland titles and 7 Irish Cup titles – an unprecedented achievement. They have managed to do the «double» on three occasions, the most recent of which was 2008.

They have also gone through to Europe and competed in the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners Cup, although so far with only moderate success. This should however be tempered by the status of the game in Ireland and the resources that the club has at its disposal.

In Ireland football is more often referred to as soccer to avoid confusion with the indigenous sport of Gaelic football which is a different game completely and achieves a higher national status.

Bohemian FC’s colours are red and black and this has been the case since 1893. Tradition has, and remains, and important part of Bohemian FC’s special history.

Supporters of Dublin’s premier club tend to be from northern Dublin and attendances are in the region of 2,000 to 4,000 fans per match. The fans refer to Bohemian FC as either the «Gypsies» or the «Bohs».

The club are based at the Dalymount Park stadium, their home since 1901, however moves have been made to sell the ground for redevelopment and build a new stadium at Harristown. Legal and financial complications are currently holding this process up.

Despite these hiccups, the future of the club looks positive and with success on the field continuing to reach ever higher levels, Bohemian FC look set to dominate Irish football for some years to come.

The Arizona Cardinals have only played in the state of Arizona since 1988, but the team has been around since 1920. In all those years, the team has had their fair share of great running backs. Here is a look at five interesting facts about the Arizona Cardinals running game.

#1 – The longest run in Cardinals history was done by John David Crow. He played running back for the team from 1958 to 1964. During his rookie year, more than fifty years ago in 1958, he pulled off an 83 yard run that is still the longest run ever by a Cardinals player.

#2 – With 7,999 total yards, Ottis Anderson has more rushing yards for the Cardinals than any other player in team history. Tight end Jackie Smith, who played for the team from 1963 to 1977, is the leading rusher for the team of any player who played the receiver position, with 327 yards. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin is in second on that list, a little over 100 yards behind him.

#3 – No Cardinals quarterback has rushed for more yards for the team than Jake Plummer. During his six years on the team he ran for a total of 1,183 yards. He did not however rush for the most touchdowns. That record belongs to Jim Hart who played for the team from 1966 to 1983 and ran for 16 touchdowns during that time.

#4 – Only two Cardinals players have rushed for a thousand yards in a season in their rookie year. Ottis Anderson did it first in 1979 when ran for 1,605 yards. The other player to accomplish this was Ronald Moore who in 1993 ran for 1,018 yards.

#5 – Ottis Anderson has more 1,000 yard rushing seasons for the Cardinals than anyone else. During his time with the team he had five 1,000 yard rushing seasons. In fact, only one other player has ever had more than one 1,000 yard season. That player is Edgerrin James who had two of them.
